Don’t get me started on the amount of people who stand in their chairs during a concert. I’m not paying hundreds of dollars to look at your ass. Needless to say….in FabuLisa fashion….I refuse to let that happen and I’ve been in many fights about it. Security even got in on a couple of those. If someone has the nerve to be disrespectful….then I’m coming after you.

The end.

Ps….one of my favorite sayings has always been….Silence is Golden and Duct Tape is Silver.

One of the times we relocated, there was a dude who was shit-housed that kept stepping up onto his chair and then jumping off. As silly as he looked, I couldn't help but be amused by his commitment to launching himself in the air again and again.

Think I should re-title this piece, "STFU Because Silence Is Golden & Duct Tape Is Silver"

Shushed a full-grown adult for the first time in my life. It was at a small, intimate acoustic show, the kind where the artist had just shared that the song was about one of the hardest times in their life. Second row from the front, this woman starts loudly bragging about some date she’d been on, like we were all there for her highlight reel. I was seething. Embarrassed for her, for the artist, for everyone in that room. So I leaned over and shushed her. Quiet, firm, slightly feral. Honestly, I think it scared us both.

Oof, that is both embarrassing and infuriating. I'm glad you went full feral-mode and shhhushed that biznitch into oblivion!

This one resonates with me wholly.

As a concert goer, I’m paying to see a band perform. I’m excited to be there in person to hear the songs that transport me to my happy place. I want to see the emotions from the players, see the sweat drip from their exertion, and check out the cool gear they use to make the magic happen.

I may be there with friends or other musicians, but we are all on the same page when it comes to being present and appreciating the art that is unraveling before our eyes. Not many words need be spoken. That said, and with the cost of national act tickets these days it is even more important to be in tune with the reason everyone is there - to listen to the music!

As a musician, performing on stage for an audience is a blessing and generates some of the best feelings out there. A band making music together is a truly wonderful, magical thing. Furthermore, there is a reciprocal energy exchange happening between performers and attendees that creates a symbiosis. Players put effort, energy, and love into every note/song and the listener can feel it. In return, an attentive audience can help fuel and refill those reserves and those on stage feel it back. Everybody wins!

If I look out into an audience and see people into the music, singing lyrics, swaying/dancing, air-drumming/guitaring, etc., I immediately know we are doing something right. It takes the wind out of my sails if I look out and see side conversations, people not paying attention throughout a show, or someone disrupting other people’s vibes.

Shush others as needed! Be there, be present and enjoy!

I look forward to checking out your MMJ playlist! Thanks, man!

Says the professional musician.

Brother, this reflection means a lot coming from someone who’s lived both sides of the stage.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful, grounded perspective - it adds so much weight to my rant.

That symbiosis you speak of... man, when it clicks, it’s pure magic.

Grateful for your voice in this one - hope the playlist hits you good! 🎸

Oof I felt this. I was at a concert recently and my all time favourite song was playing. I was in the standing room section, and this man in front of me went back and forth between my friend and I three times during this song, loudly talking and pushing his way through each time (beers, bathroom, say hi to a friend). It was a quiet, heartfelt song, and I damn near lost it. There were so many better moments to get antsy that wouldn't have been disruptive and for the life of me I couldn't understand WHY he thought that was an appropriate time 😅

I totally get the need for a beer or bathroom break, but there are courteous ways to go about it. Most notably - in silence. I'm sorry that happened to you, but I'm grateful you shared. Makes me feel a little less alone in planting the flag for collective presence and consideration.

And.. I'm totally curious what song it was?

I’ve was obnoxiously drunk and loud at a Rod Stewart concert many moons ago and I still cringe with shame at the thought of it. Not my finest hour 🤦🏻‍♀️

And, I don’t get it either. It’s like people really don’t appreciate and understand the potency of their attuned listening and how precious a currency it is 💛

You’ve really impressed upon me ~ you never know which song is deeply meaningful to someone ~ I’ll never not think of that.

The most valuable gift we can give, or receive, is that "attuned listening." 💯

Yeeeeeessssss! Thank you 🙏 I always thought I was the only person who's so bothered by this type of behaviour... I've been told to "just chill" by people who were with me when I would voice my disdain 😒

Clearly, we are not alone. Just boggles my mind how people are willing to be so inconsiderate in shared spaces. Especially when there are artists pumping out blood, sweat, and tears right in front of them.

I had never heard of them. Listened to Golden and I was unsure (like meh and I can see why it would be hard to hear them with all the people around not S'ing TFU).

But One Big Holiday got me sold...I bet that sounds so cool live! 🔥🔥🔥

Saved the playlist to enjoy all of it in silence.

Dude, I was highly disappointed in their new album, which just dropped last week.

But after hearing them get after almost every track live - I'm now all in.

I didn't put any of the new album on the playlist, but I'll do so once you've had some time to get into them. 🤘🏼

I was not previously familiar with the bad and I’m digging it- dynamic, eclectic, soulful! Particularly enjoying The Devil's in the Details, that entire album actually.

You have no idea how much I enjoyed reading that. Introducing people to food and music are two of my favorite things.

And yes, that song is something. I especially appreciate the fact that you favorited the one that’s 9 minutes long – taste of a true music lover!

Check out "Tropics" – one of my all-time favorites.

I went to see Lyle Lovett at the Granada in the early 90’s and the entire audience was listening to the music with rapt attention. EXCEPT THE GUY TWO ROWS BACK WHO WAS PLAYING HIS HARMONICA ALONG WITH THE BAND. And poorly, I might add! He was shushed numerous times by others, and I was so thoroughly disgusted by his behavior that I finally got up from my seat and marched into the aisle, saying loudly “We all paid to see Mr. Lovett and his Large Band perform. Not you.” Of course, I had a 6’5” man to back me up on this, so I wasn’t scared of retribution…

And so he continued! Finally, another guest went out and brought back a manager and security. They escorted the extra musician out of the building. As they should.

What gives people today permission to act like such dicks??? I’m so sad you had this ridiculous experience. 💔❤️‍🔥💘

A harmonica? During Lyle Lovett? That's hilarious and humiliating.

Hat tip for standing up and saying what the rest of the room was thinking! 🤠

Even without the concert as a destination, I’m consistently shocked to find people blissfully unaware that they share this world with others. As you say, some of us might even be overly so, but there is definitely a need for more consideration, especially of your surroundings.

And my bud Adrian knows what he’s talking about when he says music can transport you—his playlist gave me a free trip to Kathmandu!

Yup. Went to a comedy club a few weeks ago.

Table of 6 in front of me would not STFU!

I love the comedian (Drew Lynch - look him up, you’ll like him) and not getting to hear him was upsetting. I left angry and disappointed.

I’m the same as you (probably for the same reasons), always so mindful of others. Sucks life from my soul when people are mindless assholes.

It's way less common at music venues, but I've been to comedy shows were comedians go IN on audience members being loud and obnoxious. I wish Drew would've sorted their asses out for you.
